Whatsapp Group Not Showing – 6 Possible Reasons & Fixes

WhatsApp groups are a convenient way to interact with multiple contacts at a central place; however, you may often experience an issue with a specific group not showing in your Chats list.

To help you with this, we’ll figure out the potential causes of this problem and what steps you can take to fix it.

Why groups are not showing in WhatsApp?

  • The app fails to refresh contact lists, including groups.
  • WhatsApp is not syncing.
  • Using an outdated WhatsApp version on your Android phone or iPhone.
  • WhatsApp cache or system files get corrupted.

What to do when groups are not showing on WhatsApp?

Refresh WhatsApp List

Android:

  • Open “WhatsApp.”
  • Tap the “Chat” icon.
  • Tap the three dots.
  • Select “Refresh.”

iPhone:

  • Open WhatsApp.
  • Go to “Chats.”
  • Pull down the chat list to refresh the contacts on WhatsApp.

Another way of refreshing your chat list every time you open WhatsApp on your iPhone is by enabling the Background App Refresh with these steps:

  • Open iPhone “Settings.”
  • Scroll and select “WhatsApp.”
  • Go to “Background App Refresh.”
  • Toggle on the option.

After doing this, open the app and see if the group name shows in the chat list.

Sync WhatsApp Account

If WhatsApp fails to sync, it might prevent your group names from showing. So try resetting WhatsApp sync to see if this fixes the issue. Here’s how:

  • Open phone “Settings.”
  • Scroll and tap “Accounts.”
  • Select “WhatsApp.”
  • Select “Account sync” or “WhatsApp sync.”
  • Toggle off “Contact.”
  • Toggle on “Contacts” or “WhatsApp Sync” in an attempt to force WhatsApp to sync the Chats list and show you the missing groups.

Update WhatsApp

Android:

  • Open “Play Store.”
  • Tap your Profile icon.
  • Select “Manage Apps and Devices.”
  • Select “Updates Available.”
  • Scroll to “WhatsApp.”
  • Tap “Update” if available.

Another way to update WhatsApp on Android is to open the Play Store app, search “WhatsApp,” and tap “Update” if a recent update is available.

iPhone:

  • Open “App Store” on your iPhone.
  • Tap your Profile.
  • Go to “Available Updates.”
  • Select “WhatsApp.”
  • Select “Update.”

After updating WhatsApp, re-open the app, and confirm you can now see groups in the “Chats” list.

Clear WhatsApp Corrupt or Bulky Cache

Android:

  • Open Android “Settings.”
  • Tap “Apps.”
  • Tap “All Apps.”
  • Select “WhatsApp.”
  • Go to “Storage.”
  • Choose “Clear Cache.”
  • Tap “Clear Data.”
  • Tap “OK.”

iPhone:

  • Tap and open “Settings.”
  • Tap “General.”
  • Select “iPhone Storage.”
  • Select “WhatsApp.”
  • Tap “Offload App.”
  • Tap “Offload App” again.

Now open WhatsApp on your Android or iPhone, and hopefully, this will resolve your issue.

Reinstall WhatsApp

You may need to reinstall WhatsApp on your phone to erase the corrupt system files. To do this, first open “WhatsApp,” go to “Settings” > “Chats” > “Chat backup,” and tap the green “Back up” button.

Once the backup is complete, do the following steps on your Android or iPhone.

Android:

  • Tap and hold “WhatsApp.”
  • Choose “Uninstall.”
  • Tap “OK.”
  • Launch “Play Store.”
  • Find “WhatsApp”
  • Select “Install.”

You can also go to “Settings” > “Apps” > “WhatsApp” and tap “Uninstall” to uninstall the app on your Android phone.

iPhone:

  • Hold down “WhatsApp.”
  • Tap “Remove App.”
  • Select “Delete App.”
  • Tap “Delete” again.
  • Now open “App Store.”
  • Search “WhatsApp.”
  • Tap “GET.”

Note: To avoid losing chat history, remember to select the “Restore” option while opening the new WhatsApp version on your phone for the first time.

Ask Admin To Add You Again or Create New Group

If all else fails, ask the admin to delete you from the group and add you again. But sometimes, the admin cannot delete you from the group, so the only solution for them is to create a new group and add you again.
